The Jane Fund at Year’s End

In 2003, the JANE FUND OF CENTRAL MASSACHUSETTS saw highs and lows. We began in January with a thought-provoking observance of the thirtieth anniversary of Roe v. Wade, as Dr. Marjorie Clay explored the history of abortion legislation at our annual meeting. In midyear, we faced personal grief and organizational soul searching with the unexpected death of our treasurer and friend, Judy Henshaw. Now, we end the year on a note of political unease, with renewed awareness of the very great need of women in crisis and some concern about our financial ability to meet that need.

Much effort has gone into fundraising, as we’ve tried to keep pace with the growing demands for our support. Although donations this year exceeded $9,000, the more we help, the more we are asked to help. Calls to our hotline have increased significantly, particularly as cuts in government funds for health care have created severe hardship for some women. One recent call for financial aid came from a 14-yearold victim of sexual abuse, twenty-one weeks pregnant, with few resources. We were glad to do what we could. We continue to reach out to human services providers and to clinics, so that they know we are available.

We are most grateful to all of our friends who donated to the JANE

FUND in memory of Judy, and we are seeking ways to make that memorial meaningful to the lives of the women to whom Judy was devoted.
